Once again TRS welcomed soldiers from the 58 (Eyre’s) Battery, based at Thorney Island, to observe two minutes silence, on Monday 11th November. The entire school community gathered on our atriums, and respectfully remained in silence, as the soldiers marched into the school as part of the formal proceedings. Sixth form students Sam and Harley read the exhortation, followed by the playing of The Last Post, and a two minute silence. You could hear a pin drop in the building, with everyone showing our guests the utmost respect.
Once the formal ceremony was over, invited students met the soldiers, and were able to ask them about careers in the army, and present them with postcards of thanks the students had made in tutor time. Assistant Principal, Mrs Saunders, said, ‘the Act of Remembrance’ really is a special day in the TRS calendar. Our students showed absolute respect throughout. To see 1700 young people gather as a community, alongside all the staff in the building is something quite special. To prepare students they have been learning about the history of Armistice Day in tutor time, and had the opportunity to write a thank you postcard, that the soldiers have taken back to Thorney Island to share with their colleagues’.
