Ricardo Engineering Slot Truck Challenge
28 March 2019
Cetenary Centre, Ricardo Technical Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea
The Regis School is continuing efforts to expose KS3 students and in particular girls to technical career choices and opportunities.
Two teams of year 8 and 9 students got to take part in a slot car challenge at Ricardo Technical Centre in Shoreham on 28 March. They were tasked with designing and building a slot car that would be able to compete in three challenges. The first was a timed event around 5 laps of a track, the second was a windtunnel challenge and the third a hill climb carrying increasing amounts of weight. This was followed by a destruction test to see how robust the student’s designs were.
The students were then taken on an interesting tour of the factory that builds engines for Maclaren cars. They were also given lots of information about some of the cutting edge research that is carried out on the site and learnt about many of the different careers that are associated with the motor industry.
The highlight of the day was one of our teams winning the second place trophy. We are very proud of them as they were up against some stiff competition.
Students who took place in the Challenge were: Owen Halligan, Chester Banton, Sonny Smith, Ruby Merret, Isabelle Matthews, Ella Hemming, Alice Keel, Eleanor Grant.
