Family Rocket Car Racing Event

On Wednesday 22nd January several families of Year 9 students joined us for a fun STEM activity run by the Design Technology Department and Regis Careers. The aim of the event was to encourage students to explore their creativity and to start thinking about Careers in Design and Engineering.
The evening started with families getting into teams and taking part in a quiz and Dingbats competition. Everyone was then shown how to build a basic rocket car and given lots of materials to go away and design their own car. Every team came up with a different solution to the brief they were given. Half-way through the evening we enjoyed pizza from Pizza Base in Felpham and Ice Cream from the lovely ladies at Pinks Parlour in town. Suitably refreshed the teams then went head to head to find out who had built the fastest or most robust car. Every team managed to produce a working model, with several of them managing to blast right across the hall and hit the wall on the other side. Prizes were given at the end of the evening and every child took away a voucher for a free ice cream from Pinks. Thanks to Tesco, Morrisons, The Picturedrome, Butlins and Pinks Parlour for donating the prizes.
We had some lovely feedback from both students and parents, some of which is printed below. We will be running a similar evening in the Summer term, where we will be firing rockets into the air. Look out for the invitation by email or in this newsletter.
