A group of 8 students from TRS attended an annual debate event at Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton on 28 March.
This event stemmed directly from the work undertaken by Arun Youth Council and the topics they have been discussing. They were keen to take it to a wider audience of representatives from local schools. The group discussed important local and national issues such as Plastics pollution, lowering the age of voting to 16 and terminal examinations pressure.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed engaging in debating, getting their points across and listening to the views of others. We hope to share this work with our wider Student Voice team in school and take the opportunities to discuss this issues that the young people of Arun feel passionately about.
The students taking part were:
Harley Collins Chairman for the Debate , Megan Bryant Lawson, Josh Patterson , James Ryder invited to Chair final debate, Phoebe Reeves, Ruby Haga-Hammond, Willem Keijser-Petch and Logan Rimmer-Woods.
Going to the Arun Youth Debate was fun as I got to respectfully argue with other pupils all across Arun. Although on the 5 debates I was 4 times on the losing motion, it was still eye-opening that so many young people can make a decision and have some really thoughtful, persuasive ideas. My favourite debate of the day must be “allowing people to Vote @ 16”. This is because as part of the West Sussex Youth Cabinet, when we have almost finished a campaign, we go to the West Sussex County Council chambers and debate on the subject with the County Councillors - this was one of the campaigns we did, and we got the motion for for!!! The lunch was also really good - like really good: especially the cheese straws! It was a fun day.
